Lake Magadi

In a depression of approximately 1000 meters below Nairobi, Lake Magadi, in the Great Rift Valley, is the Southern most lake.
In approximation, this magnificent soda lake covers 104 sq km as the area.
It’s considered the second largest Sodium carbonate source due to the fact that it’s made up of alkaline water composed of a dense sodium carbonate brine precipitate and very large quantities of crystal frona deposits.
Lake Magadi is popularly known for it’s breath-taking landscapes, beautiful colors of it’s soda water as well as the pink flamingo flocks, though it is situated in one of the driest and hottest regions of Kenya. Depending on the changes in the light, this beautiful lake changes from brilliant white to cerise pink, cobalt, indigo, deep scarlet and soft pastels.

Due to absence of predators from this lake, it is one of the most preferred nesting ground for flamingo flocks in thousands of number.
The pinkish birds excavate 20-40cm high cones to lay their eggs whenever they visit Lake Magadi and usually in very large numbers.
Other animals find it hard to survive at Lake Magadi since it’s surrounded by extensive salt flats.

Even Tilapia Grahami, one of Africa’s toughest fish, though lives in the hot springs on the fringes of Lake Magadi, finds home in this lake.
Other host birds are attracted by it’s fresh water springs.
You can’t afford to miss out on Lake Magadi and what it has to offer, while on your Kenya tour with Kenya Wild Safari.
