It is situated in the Great Rift Valley in Northern Kenya. It is one of the largest lakes in the whole world.
It’s altitude is 375m or 1230ft above sea level and covers an area of over 6400 sq km. This has contributed to it’s standing out as the largest desert lake in the entire world.
This Lake’s other name is Lake Rudolf.
It is surrounded by dry desert and hills, and within this lake are 3 volcanic islands commonly referred to as the Jade Sea, due to their electric blue-green color.

Turkana offers a unique sight of the shimmering colors of it’s surface, which differ from those of the barren, lunar landscape of extinct volcanoes and lava beds that surround it.

This lake is popular for it’s crocodile population and hippos since it shelters about 22,000 crocodiles, the single largest crocodile population in the world.
Other attractions on this lake are Gravy’s zebra, reticulated Giraffes camels.

Turkana as a lake is also considered as “the cradle of Humanity” as the recent humanoid Fossil evidence was unearthed at Koobi Fora on Lake Turkana. It is also indicated that they have lived for over 3 million years.
It is now protected and situated in the heart of Sabiloi National park, a place of stark beauty and Pre-historic Petrified Forests.
Tribal settlements at Loyangalani, Kenya’s smallest tribe, Elmolo, constitute other attractions of Lake Turkana.  People reside in nearby villages in their rounded houses made of reeds.
