Deserts in Kenya

Rich in great geographical and topographical diversities is the land of Kenya.
Some of the world’s most captivating and thrilling valleys, deserts, mountain rangers and beaches are found in Kenya.
Kenya is a nation composed of a large expanse of desert and semi desert landscapes.
These harsh and sparsely populated deserts have a stunning natural beauty for which they are popularly known and are majorly situated in Northern Kenya.
Kenya’s deserts are world famous for their traditional caravan routes and towering sand dunes, though they are not as extensive as those in other parts of Africa.

Also, such tribes as the Samburu, Elmoro, Turkana, Pokot, Marakwet as well as the Gabbra tribes, the last Kenya’s nomadic tribes, find home in these deserts.

Intrepid adventurers who like venturing more into the wild and heading for an expedition into the unknown, will get the real adventure they are looking for in the deserts of Kenya.
The regions around Maralal, Marsabit and Lake Turkana, Z and the inhospitable Chalbi Desert, which is known as Kenya’s only true desert, are some of the most popular desert and semi desert regions in Kenya.

The hottest and most arid region in Kenya is Chalbi desert, since it’s surrounded by volcanoes and old lava flows.
Traditional tribes like the Rendile and Gabra, the desert nomads who maintain a camel culture, find home in Chalbi desert due to it’s large and wide dunes as well as volcanic mountains.

Such rare bird species like the Somali Ostrich, the very rare Hammergeyer called the bearded vulture and the Black faced Heughins’ bustard, are sheltered by the inhospitable Dida Galgalla Desert located in the North of Marsabit. There is a desert and semi desert region, which is harsh and sparsely populated just beyond Marsabit. This region is Nyiri Desert and is situated near the Northern border of Tanzania and approximately 80Km East of Lake Magadi.

Amboseli National Park, which is famously known world over, is encompassed by this desert. It’s quite amazing that animal species like Rhinoceros, Impalas, Giraffes, Lesser kudus, Elephants, Lions, Grevy’s Zebras and Leopards find home in this desert.
