Lake Baringo National Park
There are only two fresh water lakes in the Great Rift Valley and Lake Baringo is one of them, situated at approximately 290Km North of Nairobi in the Northern Kenya region.
This fabulous fresh water lake being surrounded by large arid plains, once looked at, will simply be an oasis in the desert.
Lake Baringo is endowed with a rich and diverse avian population having 470 bird species and over, and for that, it is world famous.
3 islands namely; Teddy Bear, Gibraltar and Ol Kwoka, make up this shallow lake of 8 meters deep on average.
These 3 islands provide breeding grounds for the largest of the heron species called Goliath heron.
Resident Hippos also find favourable conditions for growth and survival at the shores of this lake, which are marshy.
An area of about 170 sq. km is covered by the captivating Lake Baringo and magnificent volcanic ranges surround it.
Numerous species of Birds are attracted to this lake because it is filled up with a variety of rare fish species.
Paradise fly catcher, Cormorants, Fish eagles, Pelicans, Owls, African Darters Marabou storks, Hornbills (alongside the cliffs) as well as Gabar Goshawk, are the most famous and commonly seen bird species at this lake. From the world over, many ornithologists and bird lovers in thousands of numbers are greatly attracted by this lake.
Crocodiles and hippos in reasonable numbers are also found here. Rock Hyrax, which is a small rodent-like mammal, is another centre of attraction, which you can’t go without seeing.
This animal can be sited around basalt cliffs.
A nearby island to this lake has two spectacular hot springs, which are a must-see attraction.
