Mountain Kenya Forests

Local Kikuyu people stay on this tallest mountain and worship it because they believe that it inhabits their god, Ngai and so is termed, ‘the place of light’.

Mt. Kenya being the second highest mountain after Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, is covered with thick vegetation on lower slopes, with snow at it’s peak.
It has many plant and rare animal species in addition to birds, which gives a captivating sight to it’s visitors.

The thick forest shelters animal species like; squirrels, monkeys, reptiles, insects and bird. Trekkers will enjoy pausing beside streams and lakes, which have their origin right from mountains.
Colobus monkeys or giant eagles can be sighted on the way.

Some of the rare plants in the montane forests include; Podocarpus and groundset.
It s will take you 3-5 days to ascend the summit of Mt. Kenya at 5199 meters or the lower part of Lenana at 4985 meters, but all depends on the weather.

The highest peaks of Mt. Kenya rise skywards and the sunlight is reflected off the white snow. Melting of snow supplies water to down flow of streams which you can cross and feel the chilled water of the snow of the Mt. Kenya.
